Scandinavian Design’s account manager contacted me looking for a Ho Chi Minh City Photographer for some factory and industrial photography. They were putting together some new marketing assets and needed to show their clients how their furniture is made. Scandinavian Design specializes in design, production, and sales of quality sofas and wooden products which is made in their factory in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He sent me the following guidelines:
“A selection of photos of the production and materials,
Pictures of the people working in the production,
Close-up ‘working’ photos,
20-30 total selected photos for unlimited amount of time usage with no advertising”
We setup a Skype call and we talked about 30min about they style they like, how they will use the images, what they want to show to their clients and how I would shoot this. They told me they wanted to show safety aspects, all the different phases of the production as well as that their employees are generally pretty happy about their work and proud of what they make.
For this shoot my assistant and I arrived at the factory at opening time and the local contact showed us around the factory for an hour so we could understand all the aspects of their production. After this we started in each area of the operation and studied how people go about their job. We then picked out the people who stood out and also had a visually easy to understand roll and then set them up for a shot. When you look at the photos they don’t look posed because they are not, we only set people up to do an action this way we can get a natural shot but of what we need to capture for the client. When working on creating a library of images from details, portraits, overview shots to general shots in only a one day shoot you can’t wait for the perfect moment to happen, you have to create it and then also be ready for when those perfect moments do happen.
